Rebuilding Our Business

In 1982, tragedy struck the Koontz family when an arsonist burned our store to the ground. Luckily, a claims adjuster had been shopping there the day before and was able to verify the uncommonly large size of our inventory.

The destruction of our store had such an impact on our community that talk show host Paul Harvey dedicated seven minutes of his show to our loss. Wasting no time in the rebuilding process, we took over a nearby WWII bomb site factory and continued serving our loyal customers.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

After the Northridge earthquake in 1994, Koontz continued operating without electricity to give the members of our community the help they needed. By arming our employees with flashlights and using cigar boxes for cash drawers, we sold truckloads of inventory every day as our resilient patrons began rebuilding their lives.
